Inspection of Pins for Correct Grip Length

To determine if the pin is the correct grip length, the amount of pin thread protrusion must fall between prescribed maximum and minimum limits. Checking pin protrusion can be done with the appropiate Pin Protrusion Gage Set. There are separate gage sets for both the Hi-Lok and Hi-Lite fastening systems, and for both the inch and metric measurement systems. The principle of the protrusion gage checking is shown in the diagram below. Checking pin protrusion limits can be done before or after collar installation. Checking must be done with the bottom part of the gage resting flat on the work surface, or on top of a washer surface if a washer is used. Any protrusion between the minimum and maximum limits is satisfactory.
